How to get your OpenAI API key

In Montagist, your OpenAI key is used for the AI steps — topic, fact ledger, capture plan, script and storyboard (you can pick a model per step in settings).

Where to get it

Open the OpenAI key pageplatform.openai.com/api-keys

Before you start

  • New accounts are prepaid: add a payment method and buy credits first ($5 minimum).

Create the key

  1. Sign in to the OpenAI platform and open the API keys page.
  2. Click Create new secret key and name it Montagist.
  3. Copy the key and paste it into Montagist — the full key is shown only once, at creation.

Connect it to Montagist

  1. In Montagist, open Settings › Connections › Models and find the OpenAI card.
  2. Paste the key; Montagist recognizes the provider from how the key starts.
  3. Click Test connection: it runs in the cloud and shows the result and timing, with a plain explanation if it fails.
